One emerging market risk is operating in a culture where people aren’t happy to speak out. When local staff feel disconnected from expat staff or management, companies do not get the benefit of hearing what they might be doing wrong or the cultural screwups they might be making, says Robin Bew, chief economist with the Economist Intelligence Unit.

He says it’s important that management creates a structure where local staff are fully integrated into the organization. It’s a key way to bridge any divides and bring the market’s culture back into the company.
