Companies often run into problems when head office tries to impose their business models and practices in emerging markets. The way business is done in North America or Europe may not drive success in Asia or Latin America where the skill sets are not the same or where growth makes the market more volatile.

That’s a management issue, not a market issue, says Robin Bew, chief economist for the Economist Intelligence Unit.
